Haiku Learning Management System, makes it easy to create a classroom community on the Web, and includes many features and tools that help make the teaching and learning process more simple and interactive. It is fairly simple to use and navigate through after the sign up process. I chose this Web 2.0 tool, because I believe I could utilize it in my future classroom. Furthermore, everything is presented to students in a format/presentation and language that they are familiar and comfortable with. Teachers can easily keep track of everything in one place including attendance, assignments, assessments, discussions, and grades.
INCORPORATING CLASS TOOLS INTO YOUR CLASSROOM
Although students and parents will require an email address and need to create their own account when signing up to have access, I think it is well worth it. There are Web 2.0 tools that easily allow students to attain an email address. This learning management system also allows parents to be a part of this online classroom community. Announcement, assignments, wiki projects, polls, and assessments can be posted. Pages can be created to which text(s), files, images, audio, videos, web links, and YouTube videos can be added. A calendar is provided, so the teacher, students, and parents can be see important due dates and other school or class events. Teachers can keep an online attendance and grade book, and print attendance and grade book reports. Teachers can directly send emails to students and students can send e-mails to their teacher. Students can send e-mails to their parents and other students in the class; however, these settings can be controlled by the teacher. All e-mails are kept within the Haiku Learning Management System.
Teachers and students will discover that the teaching and learning experience and process can be more fun and interactive when using Haiku Learning Management System. Students can complete and submit assignments, and take assessments online, instead of sitting at their desks with a pencil and paper for extended periods of time. Teaching and learning does not have to stop once students leave the classroom at the end of the day. I would use this tool to help reinforce concepts students have already learned and introduce new ones, so students can continue and extend their learning at home. I would also use this tool for students to communicate with each other, and allow them to engage in discussions that spark creativity and depth of knowledge and understanding on a variety of topics. Incorporating these kinds of Web 2.0 tools, students are able use and apply technology in constructive and meaningful ways, and to create and learn through collaboration and innovation. Haiku Learning Management System also provides teachers with the opportunity to align assignments and assessments with the NETS.
